A stretch mark may be characterized by weakness, thinning, roughness, stiffness, decreased tissues, diminished cellular proliferation and decreased function. The treatment for stretch marks helps the skin to regain firmness, strength, suppleness and elasticity. The stretch mark creams aims at skin replenishment by collagen and elastin synthesis stimulation.

The creams should be able to distinguish between scar tissue and the surrounding functional tissues. It should also be able to degrade the protein making up the scar tissue and separate amino-acids to create new skin. Stretch mark creams may also address skin dryness, superficial scar tissues, collagen and elastin and collagen synthesis.

The creams usually contain ascorbic acid or Tretinoin, or ointments having glycolic acid, moisturizing oils such as Emu oil, Rose Hip oil, Olive oil and/or Squalene, Cocoa Butter, Aloe Vera and Shea Butter. The moisturizing oils present in the creams may improve the content of lipid in the skin, enhance water retention and often skin texture. Also, Aloe Vera may decrease the redness of new stretch marks.
